About Ulf K. Ottho, Mediator

Ulf Ottho Mediator

Ulf K. Ottho LL.B. is an accredited mediator in accordance with the Family Law Act and regulations. He was first certified by the Law Society as an accredited family law mediator in 1986, and is also experienced and qualified for mediation related to estate litigation and construction law.

Ulf studied psychology and sociology at UBC, graduating from the Faculty of Law in 1974 and was called to the bar in 1975. For the next 35 years, Ulf practiced civil and criminal law, both prosecuting and defending, out of the same location in Ladner BC, known as the Delta Law Office. He was appointed standing agent for federal prosecutions in Provincial and Supreme Court and acted for the Department of Justice, Canada, from 1984 to 1996.

Family Law Experience

Ulf has spent a considerable part of his career as a lawyer in divorce and family law litigation, at both the BC Supreme Court and BC Provincial Court levels, in the areas of child custody, child and spousal maintenance and division of family assets (Supreme Court), including reapportionment of family assets.  For 35 years, family law has been a mainstay of Ulf”s civil practice. Some of the cases litigated by Ulf have been precedent setting cases in the areas of family law and estate litigation. Following extensive formal training in mediation, Ulf was certified by the Law Society in 1986 as an accredited family law mediator, and has had experience successfully concluding meditations in dozens of cases over the years. Ulf has continued his training in mediation, taking courses with Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and the Justice institute.

Prior to the establishment of Delta Mediation Services, Ulf Ottho was appointed by the government of Canada to the Parole Board of Canada, serving two terms as a Board Member, and adjudicating on hundreds of cases, before returning to a private practice exclusively focused on family law mediation and wills and estates litigation mediation.

Ulf has continued studying psychology while practicing law and has received further training in psychology while serving as a Parole Board member.  Ulf is of the view, as are other professionals familiar with psychology, that many legal disputes are driven by psychological factors and quite often one or both of the litigants in court have psychological personality traits which fuel litigation and interfere with obtaining reasonable settlements, especially in the emotionally volatile areas of divorce and family disputes and estate litigation. The mediator’s knowledge and experience in recognizing different personality traits is helpful in the mediation process.

Delta Mediation operates out of a detached office in Tsawwassen, in comfortable facilities suitable for mediation sessions. Evening sessions may be arranged for your convenience. View our Location here.
